Heaven, a well-known London nightclub, is facing closure after police labelled it the biggest crime generator in Westminster. The council has suspended the club’s license for 28 days following a serious incident involving a security guard.
Westminster Council suspended Heaven‘s license after a woman was allegedly raped by a security guard at the venue on 1 November. The accused man has been arrested, charged with rape, and is in custody.
At a council meeting, Jeremy Joseph, the club’s owner, warned that a 28-day closure would put Heaven at risk of permanent closure. He expressed concern for the 80 staff members who rely on the club for work.
The Met Police described Heaven as the “highest crime generator” in Westminster. They reported 109 incidents in the last six months, including 16 sexual assaults. However, Jeremy Joseph defended the club, explaining that the venue is required to report all incidents.
He argued that the club’s large capacity and high number of visitors meant that these figures might not reflect the club’s actual crime rate compared to other venues.
The timing of the suspension is difficult for Heaven, with the club already facing financial pressures. The club’s landlord is attempting to increase the rent by £32,000 annually, and customer spending has decreased due to the cost-of-living crisis.
Jeremy Joseph stressed that Heaven had been fighting to survive since the pandemic and that the closure could be catastrophic for the business.
A full licensing hearing will take place in December, where both the police and Heaven‘s management will present further evidence. Until then, the future of one of London’s most famous nightlife venues remains uncertain.
