In the grandiose expanse of Drumsheds London, a venue of spectacular proportions, stands the figure of James Hype, a man whose presence has not so much graced social media feeds as commandeered them. With each scroll, his influence is palpable, his clips omnipresent. Personally, I may not be swayed by his musical offerings or his stylistic flair—I must confess my biases to maintain transparency—yet one cannot deny the impact of his artistry.
In the realm of DJs, James Hype occupies a lofty perch, considerably more visible than many of his peers. Despite my divergent musical inclinations, I find myself compelled to acknowledge his achievements. Such heights of skill and presentation are not reached without relentless toil, countless hours of honing one’s craft. His appearance at Drumsheds, London, undoubtedly marks a pinnacle in his career – to stand before a throng of 15,000, the exhilaration must be unparalleled. For DJs, post-performance euphoria is familiar territory – it’s akin to a heady romance, keeping one awake with a grin that refuses to fade.
The set itself embodies a fusion of genres, predominantly rooted in the realm of mature dance music. While there are moments of synth-driven intensity and what some might deem as ‘cheesy noisers,’ one expects nothing less from a James Hype performance. Though I may not be clamouring for tickets to his next gig, I can certainly join the chorus of applause for a showman whose expertise renders even seasoned DJs like myself amateurish in comparison.
Thoughts from James Hype:
“Let me tell you a story from 2020 to 2022. I did no DJ gigs. I made no money; I survived by taking out loans, but I love DJing and I love music so much that I religiously did 4 hours of live streaming every week for 2 years. Throughout this period, I managed to find a community of people online just the best fan base I could ever imagine.
I used to have loads of viewers on these live streams, and I knew that the fans were there because, at 1 point, we started selling T-shirts and we sold loads of t-shirts. So I knew where all the fans were, and how engaged they were. Now 2022 came around and the clubs reopened again, and it was really exciting because loads of people wanted to book me all over the world, but in the UK, there were these promoters and the people who booked the festivals, and they said we’re not going to book James hype. He doesn’t sell any tickets. So if you’re from the UK, you probably noticed I don’t do many shows here. However, I know this is where my biggest audience is.
Now It’s 2024, and on Saturday night. I’m headlining Drumsheds in London. It’s a new venue. It’s in an old Ikea, and it holds 15,000 people, the O2 Arena holds 20,000. So this is almost as big as the O2 Arena. I’ve just found out there are 200 tickets left until the show sells out. So that’s a huge middle finger to the people. who said James hype doesn’t sell tickets, and I hope it’s also a huge inspiration to believe in yourself when no one else does and fucking keep going”.
