Champion Records

Our Mark Pemberton reviews the mighty Champion Records.

Champion Records is responsible for some major releases crossing many genres, House, Soul, Hip Hop and Garage artists have all had releases on this major label including: Todd Terry, Salt n Pepa, Sugar Bear, Sybil, Bruno Mars as well House music favourites, OT Quartet, Robin S, Sandy B, Raze, StoneBridge, Junior Vasquez and many more.

Starting  life in its current form in 1980, the legendary Paul Oakenfold was its first AR (Artist & Repertoire) man. Whilst working for Champion Paul had also created the equally legendary Perfecto records. Paul clearly has an eye for talent, helping bring some major talent and releases into the scene.

A major label to music lovers regardless of their preferred genre,  it’s hard to imagine any DJ that hasn’t heard of Champion records. They are still releasing to this day, supporting new talent and helping keep fresh UK talent in the business. Champion artists that can be currently found flying high in the Beatport charts include Abigail Bailey, Shermanology, Dennis Quin and Archie B. 1. DJ JAZZY JEFF – A TOUCH OF JAZZ

To mix up my selection this had to go in, Jazzy Jeff is one of the most technically gifted DJs on the planet. This reminds me of the early days after leaving school, the musical fusion incorporated in this fine slab of music just stood out from everything else around at the time and sounded so refreshingly different compared to most hip hop releases, it was a breath of fresh air! I think it also influenced other artists to incorporate other music genres into hip hop, to create that blend and sound weve heard so much.

I must admit I do prefer the instrumental version, but thats no disrespect to Will!  A sure fire favourite this!

2. ATOMISER 2 – LIBERTY AND FREEDOM REMIXES

I used to play this during my residency at the Eclipse back in the day. It sounded fantastic on a large sound system and one that seemed to get missed by many, not by me though! A Belgian banger! And once again emphasised champions diversity.

3. SYBIL – FALLING IN LOVE

I’m  proud to have come from a background which gave me a variety of musical influences. My Dad, rest in peace was a mobile DJ, he did weddings and birthdays  etc. I helped him from the tender age of 13 and funk is and was a large part of my life. All thanks to my dad.

Sybil was one of the funk female artists that stood out, along with likes of Joyce Simms, Alison Williams and many more from that era. This one just reminds me of trying to get in to my local night clubs when I was under aged but tall for my years, trying not to make eye contact with the doorman. Wednesday nights were the Soul night in town and I loved this track. Sybil had an amazing voice !

5. Orange Lemon ‎– The Texican / Dreams Of Santa Anna

For those that Know! Both sides absolute killers! Both tunes have smashed every rave worth there salt, from pillar to post and from the day it hit the first turntable until now its still does ! A timeless classics release with two firm favourites on board. If anyone reading this hasn’t heard these tracks before, I suggest you get them in your life now! – Todd Terry
THE BOSS !
