Label Review – Dufflebag Recordings
Written by HMR on 03/08/2019
Here we are with some new music to celebrate 20 years of house music with Dufflebag Recordings!! Buckle up!
Los Angeles-based Dufflebag Recordings continues to dominate and define a sound on a global level. They hold a firm place in American House Music and are sought after as premier innovators in North America. With a “hypnotic catalog” and roots from early 1998, it is a force shaping the West Coast sound. Additionally, in true Imprint fashion, their focus is to champion underground artists. They strive to bring them to the forefront in this shared creative outlet.
Dufflebag Recordings, with label boss Wally Callerio, has been pumping out deep and funky grooves paired with soulful vocals since its inception. With this style and flow throughout the tracks, Dufflebag Recordings earned local and international recognition, quickly, when the label was introduced to the industry.
With tracks like “Whispers”, from Callerio, he displays the true definition of why Dufflebag Recordings became such an influential label early on. This track starts off with a soft, mysterious vocal and a firm drum kick that progresses with a deep bass-line. As it flows into a jazzy riff that breaks down into a very funky horn & keyboard riff, Callerio, keeps giving more to the listener through his production skills. The flow of this track has and will continue to fill the dance floors for years to come.
As the label continued to move forward, Callerio created a masterpiece that received massive play and support worldwide. With “In Your Arms” being featured on Doc Martin’s Sounds You Can Feel mix, on Classic Music Company, this introduced a larger audience to Callerio and the label. “In Your Arms” is a simple, but deadly, house weapon that brings a full sound with smooth vocals to the forefront. As the hypnotic groove continues to the break down, with the deep dropping bass line, this song shows the creative direction for the label.
Releasing music on its own schedule and terms, Dufflebag has always favored the quality of music over the quantity of releases in order to stay true to the artistry and originality that the label is known to produce. This philosophy is still prevalent today, as the label is currently celebrating their 20th year in the house music industry with over 100 releases and growing.
Since Dufflebag Recordings is focused on timeless releases, while evolving, the label has a bright future. In addition to numerous releases scheduled for the remainder of the year, the label is showing that they are still a favorite among the house music community by the continued support.
Out now is the newest project “The Going Motive EP.” Producer Doc Link brings a Jackin House vibe. On “The Motive” get ready for soulful and tribal influences. Coming up next, expect “You Going” to bring a more Latin-American feel with sultry vocal samples. Each is all set to enhance the mood and feel of dance floors around the world. Callerio says, “I try to inspire people into making and playing the right stuff,” and this new EP delivers to the fullest.
