As a relative latecomer to house music in the later 90’s, I have always been playing catch up on what I missed ever since. To this day, I thrive on discovering old tracks from those embryonic days of the late 80’s and early 90’s, and when it comes to new tracks I still favour those that replicate the production techniques of that time.
So, rewind to 1997 – I bought a Hacienda compilation that documented the musical history of the club, and it blew me away. I felt like I’d found a home I’d never even visited…transported back in time, and piecing together the history of what had brought club culture to where it was at that time. When it comes to music, I’m a shameless romantic – I had this perfect image of clubbing life in the 80s, with the most incredible soundtrack, cocktails and that naivety and optimism that had long been driven out of club life. Having a large range of tastes, I found the eclecticism so inspiring, and it really opened my eyes as to what A DJ could achieve.
