Drumsheds, a popular North London venue for house music and other electronic genres, will stay open after a critical licence review. Enfield Council made the decision following safety concerns after two drug-related deaths and a stabbing at the venue last year.
The review, held on Tuesday, 7th January, resulted in the council allowing Drumsheds to continue operating under stricter conditions. Details of these new safety measures will be revealed soon.
The incidents that led to the review included the tragic death of a 27-year-old man in October. After taking drugs, he sought help from the venue’s medical staff but later died in hospital. Another attendee was also left in intensive care.
In December, a 29-year-old woman died after allegedly mixing MDMA into a drink at the club. Security measures were tightened for subsequent events, but long queues and overcrowding caused further complaints from attendees.
In November, a non-fatal stabbing at the venue left a man with multiple injuries. Police criticised the club’s security team for not cooperating during the incident.
Councillor Susan Erbil from Enfield Council said:
“The safety of our residents is our top priority. Drumsheds will remain open under new conditions to improve security and ensure compliance.”
The Metropolitan Police had asked for stricter measures, including reducing the venue’s capacity from 15,000 to 9,999 and introducing ID checks and bomb detection dogs. However, these proposals were not fully adopted.
Drumsheds has faced criticism for overcrowding, aggressive security, and poor management during events. Hundreds of complaints followed a December event, where long queues left attendees frustrated. A petition demanding refunds gained significant traction.
Despite the challenges, Drumsheds remains a key venue for electronic music in London. Events such as the upcoming Red Bull Culture Clash show its importance to the UK music scene.
Platforms like Housemasters Radio, which promote house music, drum and bass, techno, and more, support efforts to improve safety at music venues. Safe spaces allow fans to enjoy the energy and excitement of live events without fear.
Drumsheds’ ability to continue operating depends on its commitment to safety. Fans of house music and other genres will be watching closely as the venue works to rebuild trust and improve experiences for everyone.
