HMR Classics: Lil Louis – French Kiss

Never has a woman had so much fun in music!

French Kiss by Lil Louis is a legendary dance track that has become a staple of house music culture. Released in 1989 on Lil Louis’ own Diamond Records label, the track features a pulsing, hypnotic beat, a driving Hammond organ bassline, and a groundbreaking female orgasm sample that caused controversy and sparked conversations about female sexuality in music.

Lil Louis, born Louis Burns, is a Chicago-based DJ and producer who began his career at the age of 12. He became one of the most influential figures in the house music scene during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and French Kiss is widely regarded as his most iconic track.

The track shouts loud that “Chicago sound” of house music with its pulsing rhythm and driving bassline. Lil Louis himself plays the Hammond organ, which adds to the track’s hypnotic character and induces a trance-like state on the dance floor.

French Kiss also features a groundbreaking sample that has become one of the most memorable and controversial aspects of the track. Lil Louis included the sample as a way to explore and celebrate female sexuality, but it sparked both positive and negative reactions from listeners and critics alike.
